In any business, to get a new customer you need to pay a customer acquisition cost which includes your advertising expense to initially get the potential customer to contact you.

In addition, when figuring your acquisition cost, you need to also include the expense for the times when you may send your estimator and/or service tech to the potential customer’s, home or place of business and you don’t get the customer’s business.

One of the most prominent marketing experts in in the plumbing and HVAC industry reports that the average acquisition cost for the plumbing business is $250.

However, just for your information, not too long ago, I talked with a plumbing and HVAC contractor in Ohio and they told me that their acquisition cost was $450.

Anyhow, for illustrative purposes let’s assume your acquisition cost is the $250 number.

For the plumbing business, using the above $250 number, it means that each time a customer returns to give you more business, since you have previously already paid the acquisition cost to initially acquire the customer you are now making an additional $250 in profits.

Now here is something that really needs your attention. If you could get just 84 customers monthly, returning to give you their new business, within one year you would have 1,008 new sales. Then, when we multiply the 1,008 new sales by the $250 in extra profits we mention above, this then would give you an additional $252,000 in yearly profits. Wow! How does that sound?

From all of this, it is very obvious that the more repeat new business you get from your customers, the more sales and profits you should make…And that’s absolutely right.
